Los Angeles, (March 17, 2003) – What is a man to do when his wife of 42 years dies unexpectedly and his entire world is turned upside down? For Warren Schmidt, who has arrived at this crossroad in his life, it’s time to pile into his 35-foot motor home and embark on a journey of self-discovery. Alexander Payne directs About Schmidt -- the heartbreakingly funny story of one man’s attempt to find meaning in his seemingly meaningless life -- which debuts on DVD and VHS June 3 from New Line Home Entertainment. The film will be available for $27.95 on DVD and $22.98 on VHS.

By taking home this year’s Best Actor Golden Globe® for his portrayal of Warren Schmidt, the prolific Jack Nicholson broke the record for most Golden Globes® won by an actor in a lifetime (seven). With his nomination this year, Nicholson has now been nominated for 12 Academy Awards®, winning the Oscar® three times for his work in As Good As It Gets, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and Terms of Endearment.

In addition to her Best Supporting Oscar® nomination this year, Kathy Bates was also nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Golden Globe for About Schmidt. Bates, who won a Best Actress Oscar for her performance in Misery, also starred in such films as Titanic, Dolores Claiborne and Fried Green Tomatoes, for which she earned a Golden Globe nomination.

After teaming up to write the screenplays for Election and Citizen Ruth, Alexander Payne and Jim Taylor collaborated on the screenplay for About Schmidt, which won them a Golden Globe® for Best Screenplay. The film also stars Dermot Mulroney (My Best Friend’s Wedding, Lovely and Amazing) and Hope Davis (Hearts in Atlantis and the upcoming American Splendor).

      • Shortly after he retires from a lifetime of service as an insurance company actuary, Warren Schmidt’s (Nicholson) wife dies suddenly, leaving him feeling desperately alone. Trying to put his life back together, he embarks on a road trip to Denver, where his only daughter (Davis) is preparing to marry an underachieving waterbed salesman named Randall (Mulroney). Warren disapproves of his daughter’s groom-to-be and decides he must save his daughter from making the biggest mistake of her life. Throughout his journey, Warren shares his experiences in the letters he writes to Ndugu Umbo -- a six-year old Tanzanian orphan whom he sponsors -- and Warren begins to catch a glimpse of who he really is.
