TO DVD ON JUNE 7

Gripping Portrait of Haitian Social Activist Jean Dominique Features Music from WYCLEF JEAN

LOS ANGELES, CA (February 21, 2005) – Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Jonathan Demme celebrates the life of an extraordinary man with The Agronomist, available on DVD from New Line Home Entertainment on June 7, 2005. At once riveting and heartbreaking, The Agronomist recounts Jean Dominique’s career as both an investigative journalist and the director of Haiti’s Ciné Club – interweaving his life and work with the testimonies of family, friends and colleagues who worked together in the fight of the Haitian people against injustice and oppression. This Gotham Award winner for Best Documentary, The Agronomist is Jonathan Demme’s (The Manchurian Candidate, Philadelphia, The Silence of the Lambs) return to non-fiction storytelling, joining an extensive body of documentaries that includes the acclaimed films Stop Making Sense and Swimming to Cambodia. The Agronomist is available on DVD at a $27.95 SRP, with a pre-order due date of May 10.
SYNOPSIS

The Agronomist is a project born of passion and friendship that tells the story of Haitian national hero, journalist and freedom fighter Jean Dominique, whom Demme first met and filmed in 1986. As owner and operator of his nation’s oldest and only free radio station, Radio Haiti Inter, Dominique was frequently at odds with his country’s various oppressive governments and spent much of the ‘80s and early ‘90s in exile in New York, where Demme continued to interview him over the years. Dominique fought tirelessly against his country’s tyranny from corrupt political regimes and overwhelming poverty. But it was Dominique’s shocking and still unsolved assassination in April of 2000 that gave the director the impetus to assemble more than a decade's worth of material into a celebration of this dynamic man and his legacy.
