Los Angeles (June 2, 2003) New Line Home Entertainment today announced the release of The Ballad of Little Jo to DVD for the first time, available on September 2, 2003 for $19.98. The film, based on a true story, tells the tale of Josephine Monaghan, who finds there are only two roles acceptable for a woman in the Old West, a wife or a prostitute- of which she is neither. So she sets out to live life as a man in order to survive. The film is currently available on VHS. Written and directed by Maggie Greenwald (Songcatcher), this feminist take on a Western standard stars Suzy Amis (Titanic, The Usual Suspects) as “Jo.” The Ballad of Little Jo also features Ian McKellen (The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, X-Men 2), Heather Graham (From Hell, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me), Sam Robards (AI: Artificial Intelligence, Life as a House) and western staple Bo Hopkins (The Newton Boys, The Wild Bunch). The DVD includes widescreen (1.85:1) version of the film, 5.1 Surround Sound and Stereo Surround Sound along with English subtitles, closed captions and animated menus. The original theatrical trailer is also included as are other trailers from New Line Home Entertainment films. |

| Josephine Monaghan is a young woman of the mid-19th century who is thrown out of her parents' home after being seduced by the family's portrait photographer and giving birth to an illegitimate child. Josephine quickly learns that young, female, pretty, and alone are a bad combination for life in the Wild West. In her desperation to survive, Josephine disguises herself as "Jo", a young man, and struggles to make a life for herself in a dingy frontier-mining town. When she takes in a Chinese man as her worker, the traditional roles of what defines a man and a woman are reversed, as she struggles to live her life on her own terms. | ||||||||||||
