Los Angeles, CA (May 13, 2002) New Line Home Entertainment today announced the VHS and DVD release of Carmen: A Hip Hopera, starring Grammy® Award winning recording artist Beyonce Knowles in her first film role. Knowles, who co-stars in New Line Cinema’s Austin Powers in Goldmember, leads the cast in this updated version of Bizet’s opera. The film, which premiered on MTV, reworks the classic tale into a modernized hip-hop musical that weaves dialogue and songs into a narrative. Carmen: A Hip Hopera will be available to rent on VHS and DVD, and for sale on DVD for $19.98 on August 20, 2002. The cast, featuring a mix of actors and hip hop artists includes not only Knowles and Phifer, but also Mos Def (Monster’s Ball, Showtime), Rah Digga (Thirteen Ghosts), Da Brat (Glitter), Jermaine Dupri (In Too Deep), Lil Bow Wow (All About the Benjamins) and Wyclef Jean. The film also features Troy Winbush (John Q., The Replacements), Casey Lee (True Crime) and Fred Williamson (From Dusk Till Dawn). The DVD will include the widescreen and fullscreen version of the film, stereo surround sound, English subtitles and closed captions. “The Making of Carmen” MTV special will be included on the DVD as well as animated menus. The “Select-a-Song” feature will allow the viewer to jump from song to song in the film directly from the menu. |

| A contemporary, urban retelling of the classic opera Carmen, this “hip hopera” follows the tragic life of Sgt. Derrick Hill (Mekhi Phifer, TV’s “ER”, Shaft, O) whose world is turned upside down when the irresistible Carmen Brown (Beyonce Knowles) enters his local bar. Through song, the star-studded cast tells the tale of their passionate romance and tragic demise. | ||||||||||||||||||
