THE GRATEFUL DEAD, JANIS JOPLIN AND THE BAND ARE ON BOARD FOR FESTIVAL EXPRESS

AVAILABLE NOVEMBER 2 AS A 2-DISC DVD SET FROM NEW LINE HOME ENTERTAINMENT

Acclaimed Theatrical Feature Debuts on Double-Disc DVD as the First Title in New Line Home Entertainment’s Distribution Arrangement with THINKFilm
LOS ANGELES, CA (August 30, 2004) – Legendary musicians the Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, The Band, the Buddy Guy Blues Band and more are all aboard Festival Express, an explosive rockumentary available November 2 as a 2-disc DVD set from New Line Home Entertainment. Directed by two-time Grammy Award®-winner Bob Smeaton, Festival Express is a rousing record of a little-known – but monumental – moment in rock n’ roll history. More than fifty additional minutes of previously unseen footage highlight this double-disc set, overflowing with extra features including interviews from past and present tour participants. The DVD is marked at a $24.98 SRP, and the order due date is October 5, 2004.

Festival Express is a true achievement in documentary filmmaking, capturing a landmark event in music history,” said Matt Lasorsa, New Line Home Entertainment’s executive vice president of marketing. “The DVD offers fans the ultimate backstage pass with a rock n’ roll flashback that combines long-lost footage and contemporary interviews.”
Set in 1970 – and consisting largely of footage that has never been seen since – Festival Express documents an eponymous “happening.” Following on the heels of Woodstock, “Festival Express” was a multi-band, multi-day extravaganza that captured the spirit and imagination of a generation and a nation. What made it unique was that it was portable; for five days, the bands and performers lived, slept, rehearsed and did countless unmentionable things aboard a customized train that traveled from Toronto, to Calgary, to Winnipeg, with each stop culminating in a mega-concert. The entire experience – both off-stage and on – was filmed by Peter Biziou, with extensive footage remaining locked away until now. That material, along with contemporary interviews with various participants, witnesses and survivors has been assembled by award-winning director Bob Smeaton to create a thrilling document of something that would – and could – never be duplicated.

The footage is among the very first to document musicians’ lives, both on and off stage, for such an extended and continuous period of time and offers glimpses of a lifestyle perhaps never to be seen again. First-person interviews with a selection of the musicians, crew and even some of the music lovers who were in attendance provide a unique insight into what may have been the last great rock n’ roll ride. According to Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead, “That train was buzzing down the rails. We achieved lift off for sure.”
