John Waters Classic Film Now A Smash Broadway Musical! HAIRSPRAY |

Los Angeles, CA (September 30, 2002) New Line Home Entertainment today announced the release of John Waters classic film Hairspray as a single DVD. Starring Ricki Lake, Divine and rock legends Sonny Bono and Debbie Harry, John Waters’ energetic and offbeat comedy is the film that inspired the current hit Broadway musical. Previously released as part of a John Waters double feature series on DVD, Hairspray was only available as part of a two-disc set with the R-rated film Pecker. With the success of the Broadway musical drawing a variety of fans of all ages, New Line Home Entertainment will release the PG-rated Hairspray on its own single DVD available for $19.98 on November 5. The Hairspray DVD will include the widescreen (1.85:1) version of the film with audio commentary from writer/director John Waters and the film’s star, Ricki Lake. The DVD will also feature 5.1 surround sound, 2.0 stereo surround sound, the original theatrical trailer, cast and crew filmographies and English subtitles. | With huge hair, a big grin and all the right moves, Tracy Turnblad (Ricki Lake, in her feature film debut) has what it takes to make it on Baltimore’s number one dance revue in 1962, “The Corny Collins Show.” Now a teen hero, she starts using her fame to speak out for the causes she believes in, most of all integration. In doing so, she earns the wrath of the show’s former star, Amber Von Tussel (Colleen Fitzpatrick, now known as the singer, Vitamin C) as well as Amber’s evil parents who cook up a plot to steal back Amber’s teen queen crown. Standing in their way are Tracy’s own funny folks (Divine and Seinfeld’s Jerry Stiller).
