LOS ANGELES, CA (December 6, 2004) – Three-time World Series of Poker winner Stu “The Kid” Ungar is an iconic figure among poker fans – a legend just as famous for his failures as for his successes. On March 15, 2005, New Line Home Entertainment brings Ungar’s turbulent story to life in the DVD premiere of High Roller: The Stu Ungar Story, starring Emmy Award®-winner Michael Imperioli (HBO’s The Sopranos) as the titular poker champ. High Roller: The Stu Ungar Story chronicles Ungar’s tragic, downward spiral into womanizing, high-stakes gambling and drugs, offering a hard-edged look at a promising life wasted by an endless struggle with internal demons. The DVD premiere release of High Roller: The Stu Ungar Story features a widescreen version of the film plus special features that include commentary from Imperioli, writer-director A. W. Vidmer and poker expert Vince Van Patten (host of the World Poker Tour). High Roller: The Stu Ungar Story will be available on DVD for $26.98 SRP, and the pre-order date is February 8, 2005. With a bravura performance from Imperioli, High Roller: The Stu Ungar Story explores the compelling story of a card prodigy and gambler who could never quite get his life together. The film co-stars a memorable ensemble, including Pat Morita (The Karate Kid), Michael Nouri (The Terminal, TV’s The Young and the Restless), Steve Schirripa (Joe Dirt, HBO’s The Sopranos) and Renee Faia (The Beat Goes On: The Sonny and Cher Story, Where the Red Fern Grows). “The poker phenomenon is sweeping the nation, with millions of fans increasingly interested in its lifestyle and culture,” said Matt Lasorsa, executive vice president of marketing, New Line Home Entertainment. “High Roller: The Stu Ungar Story features a riveting performance from Michael Imperioli and offers a gritty, no-holds-barred look at one of the original and most enduring stars of the game.” Poker has become a national obsession. Millions of American viewers tune into the Travel Channel’s World Poker Tour and Bravo’s Celebrity Poker Showdown each week, and interest in the World Series of Poker and Internet poker championships has skyrocketed during the past two years. Entrants in the World Series of Poker rose from 839 in 2002 to over 2,200 in 2003 – and the contest boasted the largest prize pool in TV poker history with more than $8 million dollars at stake! |

SYNOPSIS Based on a true story, Stu “The Kid” Ungar was a card prodigy who grew up playing high-stakes gin rummy in New York. By the time he was twenty years old, he was running for his life — escaping to Las Vegas ahead of angry mobsters. He made his name by winning the World Series of Poker the very first time he played, in 1980. Then he won it again in 1981 — the youngest player ever to repeat a win. By 1989, he had lost it all. With the help of a friend, Stu managed his demons and won the ultimate poker prize one more time, sixteen years after his first victory: the 1997 World Series of Poker championship. But, sometimes enlightenment comes too late, and victory has its price. DVD FEATURES · Feature-length commentary from writer-director A.W. Vidmer, star Michael Imperioli and poker expert Vince Van Patten · Music Video “Yesterdays” by Marc Eric · Widescreen (1.85:1) version of the film · DTS 5.1 Surround Sound · Stereo Surround Sound · English subtitles and closed captions · Spanish subtitles |
