One Film To Rule The Movie Award Season The Awards of “The Ring”
Los Angeles, CA (March 26, 2002) After appearing on over 150 national critics’ year-end top ten lists, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, New Line Cinema’s highest grossing box office hit ever, led the 2001 movie award season.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences
In February, 2002, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring received thirteen Academy Award® nominations --- the most of any film released in 2001 --- making it one of the most honored films in Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences history. Only two films, Titanic (1997) and All About Eve (1950), have ever received more nominations, with fourteen each.

Of its thirteen Academy Award® nominations --- including nods for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor (Ian McKellen), and Best Screenplay Based on Material Previously Produced or Published --- The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring received four Oscars, tying for the most honored film of the evening.

  • Achievement In Cinematography, Andrew Lesnie
  • Achievement In Visual Effects, Jim Rygiel, Randall William Cook, Richard Taylor, and Mark Stetson

The American Film Institute (AFI)
Of four nominations from the American Film Institute, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring won three:

  • AFI Movie of the Year Award for 2001
  • AFI Production Designer of the Year, Grant Major
  • AFI Digital Effects Artist of the Year, Jim Rygiel
The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA)
Of twelve British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) award nominations, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring won five:

  • Best Film
  • The David Lean Award For Achievement in Direction, Peter Jackson
  • Achievement in Special Visual Effects, Jim Rygiel
  • Best Makeup and Hair, Peter Owen, Peter King & Richard Taylor
  • The Orange Film of the Year (voted by the public)
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (the Golden Globe Awards)
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring garnered four Golden Globe nominations from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for:

  • Best Dramatic Motion Picture
  • Best Director, Peter Jackson
  • Best Original Score, Howard Shore
  • Best Original Song, "May It Be" Music: Enya/Nicky Ryan; Lyrics: Roma Ryan
The National Board of Review
The National Board of Review honored writer-director-producer Peter Jackson with a Special Achievement in Filmmaking Award for his massive, visionary undertaking. Cate Blanchett was the recipient of the National Board of Review’s award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as the Elf Queen Galadriel.

The Various Guild Awards
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring received nominations from each of Hollywood’s four major moviemaking guilds:

  • The Directors Guild of America (DGA): Peter Jackson, nominated for Best Director
  • The Producers Guild of America, (PGA): Barrie M. Osborne, Peter Jackson, and Fran Walsh nominated for the Darryl F. Zanuck Producer of the Year Award in Theatrical Motion Pictures
  • The Screen Actors Guild (SAG): The cast of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring was nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Cast of a Theatrical Motion Picture. Sir Ian McKellen was awarded the award for Outstanding Performance by a Supporting Actor in a Leading Role award.
  • The Writers Guild of America (WGA): Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, and Peter Jackson were nominated for Best Screenplay Based on Material Previously Produced or Published.
Critics Associations
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring was also honored by many of America’s and England’s leading motion picture critics associations.

  • The Boston Society of Film Critics named The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring runner-up in the Best Film category.
  • Following four nominations, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring received awards for Howard Shore’s musical score and Andrew Lesnie’s cinematography from The Chicago Film Critics Association
  • The Dallas-Fort Worth Film Critics Association named Peter Jackson as Best Director.
  • In the U.K.’s only major film awards voted on by the public, Empire Magazine, the U.K.’s leading movie website, named The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring Best Film of 2001. Elijah Wood was named Best Actor; Orlando Bloom was awarded the Best Debut Award; and Christopher Lee received the Empire Awards’ Lifetime Achievement Award.
  • The Florida Film Critics Circle named Peter Jackson Best Director and Cate Blanchett Best Supporting Actress.
  • The Las Vegas Film Critics Society awarded The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring six awards for: Director, Cinematography, Score, Song, Costume Design, and Visual Effects.
  • The London Film Critics Film Circle nominated The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring for three awards: Film of the Year, Best Director, and Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Ian McKellen).
  • The Los Angeles Film Critics Association (LAFCA) awarded Howard Shore with their Best Musical Score award and Grant Major runner-up for Best Production Design.
  • The Online Film Critics Society Awards nominated The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring for seven awards: Best Picture, Director, Supporting Actor, Ensemble Cast, Adapted Screenplay, Cinematography, and Musical Score.
  • Of twelve nominations, the Phoenix Film Critics Society honored The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring with eleven awards: Best Picture, Director, Acting Ensemble, Screenplay Adaptation, Song, Score, Cinematography, Film Editing, Production Design, Costume Design, and Visual Effects.
  • In an Amazon.com consumer poll, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring was voted the Best Fantasy Film Of All Time.
