Joseph (Dennis Hopper) and Rosalee (Amy Irving) are teachers in a small-town schoolhouse which is turned upside down by the arrival of the enticing, 17 year-old Catherine (Amy Locane), the precocious daughter of a newly-retired Major (Gary Busey). As Joseph succumbs to an intense affair with the young girl, he discovers a passion he thought he’d buried forever. As word of the affair reaches Rosalee and the Major, Joseph must overcome the tensions and find a new strength within himself.
